Assam is a northeastern state of India with its capital at Dispur, a suburb of the city Guwahati. Located south of the eastern Himalayas, Assam comprises the Brahmaputra and the Barak river valleys and the Karbi Anglong and the North Cachar Hills.

Assam is known for Assam tea, petroleum resources, Assam silk and for its rich biodiversity.

The Eastern Himalayan region is blessed with biologically diverse natural resources. The wide-ranging topographies and congenial agro-climates offer immense potential for growing almost all conceivable horticultural crops namely fruits, vegetables, plantations, spices, ornamentals, flowers, aromatic and medicinal crops, etc.

Pineapples are one of the largely grown fruit in North Eastern States of India including Assam. Pineapples are very popular amongst consumers and their availability in the form of juice or slices round the year enable the consumers to enjoy them whenever they want. Kew and Queen are the most popular varieties among the growers. Queen variety is widely grown in Assam. Karbi Anglong, NC Hills and Cachar are the major pineapple growing districts of the state. The Northeastern region of India produces more than 40 per cent of the total pineapple of the country and almost 90-95 per cent is organic.
In Assam, fruits like banana, citrus, pineapple, papaya, jack fruits; vegetables like tomato, brinjal, cole crops, cucurbits and spices like ginger and turmeric are also cultivated in commercial scale besides
growing some minor fruits and vegetables indigenous to his region.

Ginger is another commercially grown product in Tinsukia, Karbi Anglong and NC Hills districts of Assam. In the last decade, ginger production has reached ever- highest peak in Assam and maximum creditgoes to the farmer belonging to the above districts. In recent time ginger has been exported to Bangladesh, Spain, France and other European countries and the farmers are getting remunerative prices.
